Today we got word that an idea we submitted to Pepsi's Refresh Project was accepted and will now be voted on during the month of February.
Our idea is to help improve educational opportunities through emerging and online technologies. The Pepsi Refresh Project gives grants to deserving ideas which believe they can make a difference in various categories. Our idea involves giving students the opportunity to learn using today's technology by giving them access to curriculum produced by other teachers all over the country.
We could really use your support and DAILY VOTES in helping this idea get selected and get one of the top two spots to receive the grant of $250,000 which will help us develop the technology and even provide schools with their own technology and training to get them started.
If you could help us win this grant, we'd really appreciate it. You can help by promoting this on your Facebook and Twitter accounts. You can also help by Voting DAILY for our idea. Also if you have other spheres of influence that would help get this noticed and get large groups of people voting, we'd really appreciate it. So, if you have any media contacts, etc. that would really help too.
To get started, visit: http://www.refresheverything.com/onlineeducationwithbenefits and VOTE DAILY, then share it on Facebook, Twitter or even your blog and then pass the information along to anyone else who might be willing to continue to promote this for us.

With just a little time left in 2009, it's time to start thinking about how you will target your customers in 2010. There are multiple strategies and price points you could consider when trying to attract new business, but the first thing to consider is HOW MUCHdo you want to stand out in 2010 and HOW MUCH will you need to spend to get there.
Have you even thought about how much you want to spend? Some resources suggest you should spend as much as 20% of your resources on marketing a year. In some cases, that may be effective, but that doesn't always mean it's an appropriate strategy. Generally spending between 7% and 10% of your revenues on marketing is a good strategy. One thing that is definitely true is that you should ALWAYS BE MARKETING your business. The minute you stop is the moment your competition will swoop in to take advantage. When considering your 2010 marketing plan and your budget, consider bringing in your design/marketing company (Pulse Creative Partners) to help you develop marketing strategies to implement throughout the year. If you can determine ahead of time HOW you will be promoting your product or service, you can more accurately predict your budget, and more efficiently put these strategies into practice, saving time and resources. It's not always about how much you can spend but about how smart you can spend your marketing dollars to gain the greatest results. One thing we have learned is that GREAT MARKETING is not about how much money you spend but about coming up with creative, memorable experiences that make you stand out in the market.
SOME SOLUTIONS TO CONSIDER IN 2010:
• Update your website: Whether you are just making some content updates, or completely redesigning, your website is generally the first place people look to learn about what you do. If your content is out of date, or your site is hard to use, you will lose potential clients because they won't be able to get to the accurate information they are seeking.
• Consider e-mail marketing: E-mail marketing is one of the most cost effective ways to reach out to your existing customers. You can run promotions, deliver valuable tips and even showcase products or recent projects you have completed. In any case, you can reach customers for as little as $9/month sending as many messages as you want. This strategy combined with other marketing strategies can create a powerful way to stay front of mind and keep your customers coming back. Our Acquaint e-mail marketing product would be a great place to start.
• SEO is important: Search Engine Optimization has been a hot button topic for the last couple of years, but it is really important to make sure your website's SEO is healthy. In many cases things you are doing on your site are beneficial to building your search rankings, but there are some things that can actually hurt you. Have a qualified web design firm (Pulse Creative Partners) take an intimate look at your sites SEO to determine if there are some ways to heal negatives and boost the productivity of the positives. There are many creative solutions we can discuss with you that can help improve your placement when a customer searches for your services online.
• Call Pulse Creative Partners: We are eager to help you grow your business. That's what we are really excited about. Bringing us in on the marketing plan process at the beginning can help save some headaches for us and you later as we have worked together to help you determine the best solutions to implement throughout the year and in addition, helping you create a more accurate picture of what your marketing budget will look like. In many cases, we even have some creative ways to help make your marketing budget easier to manage like retainer based plans which help you distribute your marketing dollars more evenly throughout the year rather than in larger chunks periodically. Plus, this strategy allows us to work more closely with you which allows us to make decisions and change direction as the market shifts mor efficiently.

As we mentioned last week, we are redesigning our own website after 3 great years. While we work on our own site, many other clients are taking advantage of our web development services and either redesigning their own site or starting from scratch to promote a new brand. In both scenarios, clients are understanding the value a great looking and functioning site brings to promoting their product or service. SEO has also been a major topic of discussion, which we are completely comfortable tackling. A great site isn't worth much if it can't be found. We use all the latest SEO techniques to give your site better search rankings. While there is an art to this, it's not fool proof and time, as well as how well you manage your site, can also affect your SEO rankings. We do our best to educate all of our clients about the ways in which they can positively affect their rankings with just a little effort.

Interested in learning more about our web development services or how we can help you with your SEO? Contact Us and we would be glad to sit and chat.

For the past 3 years we have had a great website. It incorporated a blog as well as telling everyone about our services and showing our work in a very nice looking package. As we tell all of our clients, a good website will have a shelf life of about 3-5 years before the look and functionality needs to be addressed. Technology changes, SEO (search engine optimizaiton) rules change and our businesses even change. So we are taking our own advice by taking a fresh look at the functionality, message, overall design and the SEO on our site to create a new more user friendly experience for our visitors. Not only that, we're taking some steps forward in designing our new site with new web technology to enhance the users experience as well as to better tell our story and what we do really well. Plus, we feel this will show off just how really good we are at designing websites that are not only beautiful, but meet or exceed all the SEO requirements necessary to be found through major search engines more efficiently.
We still intend on keeping our blog, however, it won't be the focus of our attention, it will be external to our site but feeding into it so our website will be the hub for both our work and services but also the great new information and tidbits we plan on sharing through our blog. We're also dramatically cutting down the content on our site. We just want to get to the point and so do you. Our big focus is going to be on what we do, and how well we do it. We'll be putting our work and services front and center so you can begin to experience the amazing things we can offer without having to look too hard for it.
If you can't tell, we're really excited and you should be too. We'll give you more details as we get closer to launching. Plus, you'll likely see this newsletter change the way it looks as well. Keep your eyes peeled as changes will start happening soon.
Has it been 3-5 years or more since the last time you took a good hard look at how your site is functioning? Is your site accurately representing who you are today, or 5 years ago? If it's time for you to take a fresh look at your website, call us (317-882-7222) or email us and we'd be glad to sit down and take a look at it with you.

No, it's not that web developers are becoming harder to find, quite the opposite is probably true. Seems like everyone with a computer is now a web developer. The issue is starting a project with a developer then, in the middle or just before it's all done, they vanish. And usually they vanish with your hard earned cash.
I don't know how many people I have talked to recently that have that story or a slight variation of that story to tell me. The fact is, it's hard to find someone to do web work for your company who has staying power. On top of that, "web developer" or "web designer" can mean so many things to so many people. It seems that the definition of the term is in a constant state of flux, and for the guy who is planning to vanish, the definition is "whatever it takes to get you to write them a check."
Here's what Wikipedia defines "web developer": A web developer is a software developer or software engineer who is specifically engaged in the development of World Wide Web applications, or distributed network applications that are run over the HTTP protocol from a web server to a web browser.
Wikipedia also says this - which may be more important:"There are no formal educational or licensure requirements to become a web developer."
So what does that mean for you?
Really, it simply means that you need to do your homework before you write that first check. Here are a few simple items to put on your checklist:

Check and see how long they have been around...1 month or 20 years.
Check for references. Don't just look at the sites they send you to, call a former customer and get a real reference.
ASK if they are sourcing code from overseas. This isn't always bad, but I have some horror stories...
Look for a developer who will stick with you when the site is done. Websites are dynamic and should reflect the very latest from your business, so get a developer who wants to stay with you.
Don't write too big a check up front. Expect to pay something to get the project started and then arrange pay in scheduled increments along the way. Web developers have to eat, and the set schedule allows for accountability for you and the developer.

I read this article too late, now what?
Unfortunately, many people have to start over because the "vanished" developer simply didn't do things right. Just remember the checklist above or, and this is a purely shameless plug, call Pulse Creative Partners.

Dear Microsoft,
I think I speak for most, if not all of the designers and developers out there who have been desperately trying to keep moving forward with technology, not backwards. With html email newsletters trending upwards, you seem to have missed the memo about how designers and developers are creating those emails so they work well and look great on all platforms. For some reason, you have decided that taking things back to the stone age is actually a good marketing strategy and will surely win over all of those hip youngsters who love Apple and all the ways they are actually succeeding at taking over your rapidly dwindling market share. Because of course, we don't like things becoming new and exciting, rather we like to see technology change dramatically for the worst. I don't know if you have heard about this technology out there called "CSS"? But it's a pretty cool "new" way that actually simplifies the way we style html emails and websites. Apparently with all the trending towards retro fashion, table layouts are coming back too, because for some reason, you felt the need to start testing your new Outlook 2010 software to only render html emails well if they are table based.
But let's get real and speak frankly. Do you really think it's good for Microsoft as a whole to take one of it's only existing technologies that might be the only success it really has and downgrade it to within an inch of it's life? Surely with all the Vista debacles and Windows glitches you'd like to try to win us over with at least one glimpse of hope for Microsoft?
So please, take this one bit of advice from all of us out here hoping to not have to make things more complicated, FIX OUTLOOK 2010!!! We'll all think you are really swell.
Sincerely,
The Pulse Creative Partners Team
P.S. If you are a developer and feel the same sentiments, visit fixoutlook.org and show your support. Who knows Microsoft may just listen and take action.
